Latherati is closing its' doors...

It is with deep regret that Latherati Soap Foundry, as we know it, is closing its' doors. The Going Out of Business Sale will kick off this Friday, October 14 with 20% off of everything in the shop. The discount will continue to increase as the closing date of December 30, 2011 approaches.

The future...

With optimistic hope, Latherati will be taking a new direction in the New Year. Tentatively renamed Libris Fragrances, a new product line is being developed that will initially include spray perfume, solid & roll-on perfumes and will expand to include candles and other home fragrance products. Many of the current Latherati fragrances will still be available while others get reformulated and all will be relaunched in new upscale packaging.

I want to thank all of you for your support and loyalty. I truly appreciate every one of you. While it saddens me to close Latherati, an exciting new venture is underway!

Moving into Fall

And so here we go again....moving, that is. After a crazy busy summer spent at my beloved lake house, the time has come to move yet again. While I will miss the lake and the sunsets and the sweet cows at the farm next door, I will be returning to my childhood home where my dear mother of 84 is in need of care. It's to benefit us both I think and perhaps improve a relationship that has needed tending for some years now. Getting a bit personal now...my relationship with my mother has always been tumultuous. Still seeking the motherly approval I so desperately wanted growing up, I'm at a point (finally!) where I'm able to let go of her expectations and start living my own. And now we must get used to living with each other, let subtle insults roll off my back, ignore the judgments and disapproval of a life I'm trying to create that I truly believe in but she will never understand.

Perhaps this will be a lesson to make me a stronger woman. I have no regrets, no resentments. This is to be a true test in my ability to understand the woman who raised me. How many of you struggle with your relationship with your mother?

In Latherati news, Gypsy is about to be launched! Inspired by The Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo, Gypsy is a complex blend with base notes of amber, vanilla, honey, incense and musk with top notes of jasmine and orange blossom. The florals kick off the scent but the dry down is so warm and intoxicating. Look for the roll-on perfume and body cream at the Latherati shop by early October.

Also ready to hit the shelves is Moxie, inspired by A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. First, let me say that I am in love with the scent name! If you don't think Francie Nolan has moxie, read the book again! I absolutely adore Francie, not only because of her love of books but she has a strength of spirit you don't find every day. Moxie is a mosaic of old wood tenements (sandalwood, mahogany and oak), musk, cherry penny candy, raspberry and grapefruit.

The Epitome of Summer...and soap too :-)

Long awaited supplies have arrived and the soap making has recommenced! A batch a day for the next eight days. Gloom was made yesterday and will be available in the Latherati shop soon. Alter Ego, Blossom, The Cobb, Curiouser, Fanciful, Sinister and Tara are next. Also, La Mar, inspired by The Old Man & the Sea, is on the agenda to be soaped. I've had many requests for masculine scents and this one should do the trick. I'm thinking this should be an upcoming Challenge! So, stay tuned and be ready to offer up some "masculine" reads.

On a personal note, this lake house is proving to be one of my saving graces. It has brought more peace to me that I ever thought a place could provide. And for that, I am grateful. Here's how we are enjoying it.

Jane Eyre...Thornfield

The much anticipated Jane Eyre soap is on the curing rack! A gorgeously complex blend of bergamot, pine and wild violets with hints of tangerine, neroli, green moss, florals of heather, hyacinth and jasmine and a touch of pear and chamomile. Base notes of fall leaves and Mr. Rochester's cigar make this an intriguing scent.

I'm tentatively calling the new Jane Eyre-inspired fragrance Thornfield. A number of you suggested it so those that did will be getting a free bar! (I'll email you soon). I truly appreciate those that took the time to respond to my quest for a name.

On to make the companion products in this fragrance. I'll keep you posted :-)

Bust & Tattoos & Mountains, oh my!

The line formed down and around the block! Goody bags to the first 300 shoppers was enticing!

The Bust Spring Craftacular was fantastic! Met some existing customers (I LOVE to put a face to a name!), made some new friends and had an overall amazing experience. I loved the venue, the art, the food, the people.

Our hotel was near ground zero and so was this sign. It was four times as long as this pic. Eye opening.

If you squint, you can see the Statue of Liberty :-)

Those that signed up for the Latherati newsletter at the show were entered in a drawing for a gift from Latherati...a signed copy of Samantha Hunter's new romance novel, Mine Until Morning, along with a bar of soap and solid perfume inspired by the book. Kasey was the winner! Congrats Kasey :-) I've notified her and she'll be getting her Latherati package soon. I hope she loves it. I have a couple more bars left and a number of signed books so I'll be coming up with ideas for giveaways soon.

My latest tattoo..."Find your strength". It was the right time recently for me to get a new tattoo and this was exactly the phrase I needed. I feel that when you have a struggle in your life, whether it be about love, friends, family, work, etc., you need to dig down deep and find a strength you didn't know you had to get through it. The human spirit is incredibly resilient and I'm learning that finding that strength is empowering and you come out a stronger person for it. Hope it inspires you to get through whatever challenge you may be facing.

Busy, busy...

This week is time for buckling down and gearing up for the Bust show in NYC this Saturday. Today's accomplishment?

- 80 bottles of roll-on perfume
- 40 solid perfumes
- 40 lip glossaries

All made, packaged and labeled. Phew! I've been playing Mumford & Sons all day, on repeat. Here's my favorite song.

Oh and if you come to the Latherati booth and sign up for my newsletter, you'll be entered in a drawing to win a gift basket with a signed copy of "Mine Until Morning" by Samantha Hunter, along with a full-size bar of soap and a promo size solid perfume, custom blended for the book by moi :-) A delicious honey-almond blend. Random ramblings...

On my way this past weekend to see local musicians, The Rusty Doves, I took the back roads through winding farmland. How nice to avoid highways and city traffic. I had to stop and take a pic of this farm on the way and then this church on the way back. It was the only thing lit up against the pitch black of miles and miles of farms.

With so much rain lately, the worms were forced to come out and be artists!

You may have guessed that I have a thing for leaves. This one was found encased in sidewalk cement in a little town in central NY.

In show news, MayDay Underground in Rochester was awesome! I was solo for the day so I didn't get a chance to look around much but what I did see was lovely. Now, it's time to gear up for Bust! If you're in NYC on May 21st, be sure to check out this fabulous show!

I'm currently in the process of switching bottles for my dry oil body spray and body lotion. I like the squat, fat shape of these better and I really like the new labels I designed for them. I'm also switching from Kraft soap boxes to classy, glossy black ones. What do you think?

Settling in

It's been about a month since we moved into our lake house. We are settling in nicely and just waiting for Spring to come to central New York. It's trying and at least the snow is finally gone! Rain has taken it's place and turning everything green. Just a few degrees warmer and we'll be able to dip our toes in!

I'm gearing up for MayDay Underground this weekend in Rochester. This is one of my favorite shows. I see some of my favorite people and their beautiful work. Next month, I'll be heading to New York City for the BUST magazine Spring Craftacular. Very excited for that show and to spend some time in the city.

Still on the blending shelf: a manly soap, inspired by The Old Man & The Sea by Ernest Hemingway - musk and ocean scents made into a spa salt bar. Having trouble with this one as I find many of the ocean fragrance oils are too floral and that is definitely not what I'm going for with this blend. I'll keep working.

Also working on a Jane Eyre scent, a light floral with jasmine, rose & hyacinth blended with a bit of musk & vanilla. I want to incorporate Mr. Rochester's cigar without it being too smoky so that sits on the shelf for a bit.

Moving along...

While I've enjoyed my year in this beautiful old Victorian apartment, the lease is up and it's time to move on. I'll miss my wraparound front porch, tall ceilings, old creaky wood floors, french doors and unsurpassed attention to detail common to the era this house was built (1890).

But we are moving into a stunning lake house with a back deck begging for a party, beautiful lake views (can a sunset on the lake be beat?) and a dock for lounging with a good book and jumping in the lake to cool off. We'll have air conditioning (YAY!), an unbelievable kitchen with all new stainless steel appliances and a garage (I'm so tired of brushing snow off my truck!)

So, on to the next phase of my life. I find moving very cleansing and reflective. Sorting through treasures, tossing what no longer fits my life, keeping my favorite possessions.

On a Latherati note, I'll need to close up shop for about a week (probably the last week in March or first week in April) until I get settled in but there is a new Challenge right around the corner. Stay tuned :-)

Training for a 15K

I'll admit it, I have some weight to lose. I've lost it in the past but it always seems to find me again. So, this time around, I'm taking the focus OFF the weight loss and putting it on my health and training for a 15K! Makes sense, right? And who's not up for a little challenge every now and then. The big 4-1 will hit me in June and I will not waste any more time being overweight and feeling sluggish.

Officially known as the Boilermaker, this 15K takes place in Utica, New York and brings in runners from all over the world. Best part? It ends at the Saranac brewery where a frosty beverage awaits you when you cross the finish line. If that isn't enough motivation, I don't know what is!

I've always enjoyed running and pick it up when I feel I need to drop a few, but really, it's something I want to continue on a regular basis. Keep challenging myself...good for the body and amazing for the mind.

While a 15K is certainly daunting, I have until July to train. I'm up to about 3 miles and then I lose steam...and boredom sets in. No worries...a few new tunes on the ipod should help me push through that. Any suggestions??? And of course, I have to work on my stamina. Baby steps.

I hit the gym at least three days a week for a run on the treadmill; then the Nautilus machines to build some muscle and then a good stretch (my favorite part :-). I prefer to run at the high school track or the streets for a change of scenery but until old man winter decides to leave town, I'll head to the gym where I've never felt comfortable...it's just not my scene. Can anyone relate?

I've also been drinking a protein shake a day. Not only does it fill you up without a lot of calories, but it helps build muscle. More muscle = more fat loss! The rest of my diet is fairly healthy. Lots of fruits & veggies, chicken, salmon, Greek yogurt, oatmeal and brown rice.

Protein Shake Recipe:

In a blender, combine 1 cup light soy milk, 1 cup frozen berries or fruit, a few ice cubes and 1 scoop of whey protein powder. I also throw in some ground flax seeds (adds fiber, antioxidants and heart-healthy omega-3s). Kick up the blender and enjoy. :-)

Adirondack Soap, a collaboration

Adirondack soap

A new project has been in the works here at the Latherati studio. A collaborative effort with Dave & Shelly of the Get Out & Learn Foundation, a non-profit that provides environmental education for at-risk youth. The programs focus is on building self-esteem, community service and team building skills.

Dave and Shelly were inspired by the book Last Child in the Woods: Saving our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder by Richard Louv. They asked me to design a custom blend for their organization. They wanted a fresh, unisex fragrance incorporating eucalyptus and/or citrus scents. The final blend is warm cedarwood, crisp eucalyptus and citrus scents of lemon and orange. I used all essential oils for the blend and no color. The result is a simple bar that smells amazingly fresh and clean.

Along with the batches I made for them, I will be selling Adirondack at the Latherati etsy shop and donating 5% of every sale to the Get Out & Learn Foundation.

This was a wonderful project and I wish Dave & Shelly all the best in their very heartfelt and rewarding endeavor.

And the world was blanketed in snow...

As much as I do not like the cold of winter, I'll admit that my heart is at peace when I see that overnight, the world has been covered in a blanket of snow. Sounds are muffled, the trees, with their branches cradling snow, look like works of art and the air smells pure and clean and crisp.
I'll also admit that the thought of bundling up in my winter garb, grabbing my shovel and clearing my sidewalk upsets that peaceful feeling. I was preparing to do just that but wait...what do I hear? A very generous neighbor and his snowblower coming up the walk. Oh thank you, thank you. I get to stay in my cozy house with a hot cup of coffee for just a bit longer. I did send him a big wave of thanks however.

Valentine is on the blending shelf

The first day of the new year, I laid on my couch and devoured "Valentine: A Love Story" by Chet Raymo. An engrossing read, full of tension, superstition, history and religion, Valentine kept me turning the page well into the night. A great way to start off the year...a little love, a little torture (!) and an ending that left a few tears in my eyes.

This book was a sensory delight! Especially for the olfactory. I'm starting with a blend of sweet honey, musk and heady incense, followed by florals of orange blossom and jasmine. I'll let it sit a few days and take a whiff. I may be adding a bit of sandalwood, rose or clove but this process is not to be rushed so I patiently sit and wait as my fragrances meld. This is always the hardest part for me and I always want to get it right the first time. We shall see.

Once the blend is finalized, I'll be posting the "Challenge" and the prize this time will something new for me. I'm keeping it under wraps for now ;-)

Indie Garage Sale Recap

I spent last weekend selling Latherati goodies at the Bust Magazine Craftacular. What a wonderful experience. Not only did my trusty friend, Lori, and I take in the sights and eat our way through the city on Saturday, we were among the most talented of artists/crafters I've ever seen on Sunday.

Lori is one of those friends who can find humor in getting lost in NYC by my following all the pretty twinkle lights (away from our destination), empathy for aching, blistered feet and a cheerful reminder that good friends are as rare as they come. She is one of those and I can never thank her enough for a fantastic weekend.

One highlight of the show was meeting Amy Sedaris who was there signing her book, Simple Times, Crafts for Poor People. If you haven't read it, you should, as you will find yourself laughing out loud with her quick wit and snarky language. Of course, I couldn't read her book and NOT make a fragrance inspired by it! I presented her with a little gift of "Twinkles" at the show which had an uncommonly crazy blend of 15 different notes. Did she like it? I don't know but it's her book to a T.

So, the crazy weekend is over and I'm back to my normal routine of a life. NYC is great in small doses but to come back to my cozy apartment, my children and my work was what I looked forward to. I can relax a bit and enjoy the holidays in my twinkle lit living room with a roaring fire and a cup of cocoa.

Blood of the Rose and Better World Books

I finished up the author promos for Kate Pearce's new novel, Blood of the Rose. They are on their way to her publisher to help market the new book. I must tell you, I really enjoy these little collaborations with an author to make the perfect scent for a newly written book. And to pack them up and send them on their way is a little bittersweet. I get attached to the little boxes of soap and tiny perfumes. They are so sweet :-)
Exciting news here at the Latherati studio. I've been looking for a literacy program to help and after much research, I partnered with Better World Books. It's a fantastic program that not only supports literacy programs worldwide but they offer a home for gently used books so they don't end up in a landfill. They collect used books through various programs, sell them and use the proceeds to help support various literacy programs. I'm very happy to be working with them.
It's been a crazy holiday season (and it isn't over yet!) but I'm going to take a few moments this evening to have a hot cup of tea and chat with my daughter while snuggled under cozy blankets in our twinkle-light lit living room. Aaahhh.

I was absolutely giddy to be a featured artist in the new soap book The Art of Soap. Debbie Chialtas of Soapylove put the book together and it's just fantastic. Full of ideas, inspiration and love. I am proud to be a part of it.

Another proud moment...Latherati was accepted as a vendor at the Bust Magazine Craftacular in New York City on December 12th. So, I've been a soapmaking mad-woman, making sure I have all my ducks in a row.

On the Latherati Promo news front...I am just finishing up author promos for Kate Pearce's second book in the Tudor Vampire Chronicles, Blood of the Rose. We went with the same scent as the first book (Kiss of the Rose) but changed the label color to a rich, dark teal. Stunning.

Getting ready for MayDay

It's MayDay time again :-) Tomorrow is the second MayDay Underground show in Rochester, NY. So, today will be spent on some last minute re-stocking (why do I always wait 'til the last minute??) and packing up the truck. There will be a luau theme and I'm wondering if it's too cold for a grass skirt and coconut bra...uh, yea, probably. What am I saying? Even if it were 100 degrees, you wouldn't find me donned in such a get-up!

Wanted to share a couple of finds with you. I'm addicted to buying old, unusual books and you can often find me scanning the bookshelves at any thrift store I happen to find. A word to the wise...if we are ever on a road trip and I spot a thrift store, grab the dashboard and hold on for dear life because I WILL be stopping :-)

I've been working like a madwoman trying to restock for some upcoming shows. I'll be at the MayDay Underground Show in Rochester, NY on November 6, 2010 and I'm having a Home Show in December. We're calling it a SIP 'n SNIFF as we will have lots of wine and food and shopping :-)

Had an awesome time at the Salt City Market in Syracuse, NY! Saw some familiar faces and met some new ones. The talent was beyond amazing. Sam writes for Harlequin Blaze and this steamy story takes place in Ithaca, New York, home to many great vineyards and wineries. The main character, Abby, owns a winery and her hero, Reese, is back in town recuperating after an accident. You'll have to get the book to read more about their seductive and impassioned romance!

Latherati Body Cream

My test batch of body cream went out to testers and the reviews are in. While the majority of testers liked the formula just the way it was, a couple of them thought it was a bit too greasy. I tend to agree. So, after a bit of tweaking, I believe I have hit upon the perfect body cream formula!

A bit heavier than my body lotion, this cream is perfect for winter-dry skin or just those rough spots, like elbows and knees. It is chock full of rich mango and shea butters, along with moisturizing avocado oil, jojoba oil, fractionated coconut oil and glycerin. It is so rich and creamy and absorbs quickly into your skin.

Not only do I love the result, I luxuriate in the entire process of making cream. It borders on true meditation. I put on the new Adele cd and get to work...a little dancing happens with the song "Tired" and some pondering goes on in my head with the song "Make you feel my Love", a song written by Bob Dylan and my new favorite.

Every thing seems right in the world when I work and when products like this come together in the most perfect way, I am at peace. I won't mention the times when I've spattered raw soap in my eye (I know, safety goggles!) or colors are off or fragrance blends have to go back to the drawing board...but such is life. I believe we learn more from our mistakes than our successes.

But I digress...

The first few batches of cream were packaged in clear 4 oz. jars with black lids but I switched over to the amber jars with silver lids. I think it fits the "Latherati" aesthetic better :-)

I'll be listing the new body cream throughout the week at a Promo price of $6.00 per 4 oz. jar. They will retail for $8.00 after October 31. Grab 'em now for the holidays and I'll be throwing in a coupon for Latherati savings in November!

Finally, I've made both batches of the winning Delicious Autumn! books.

Secrets ~ inspired by The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield ~ a blend of jasmine, orange blossom, ginger, lemon and rich, hot cocoa. The florals hit you first, followed by smooth, hot chocolate and tangy ginger and lemon.

Sugar Bones ~ inspired by The Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury ~ carved pumpkins, candy corn, sweet, smoky tobacco, Autumn woods, moss, a twist of lemon and vetiver

Also in the works is a new cream, just in time for winter-dry skin. This cream is heavier than my lotion and comes in a 4 oz. jar. Loaded with creamy shea butter and heavier oils like olive and avocado oils blended with jojoba oil and a bit of cyclomethicone to cut down the greasiness factor.

I'm looking for a few testers to get a real opinion of this cream. The first five people to send me their address (latherati@yahoo.com) will receive a FREE full size jar of cream in Sinister to test. I only ask that you give me your honest opinion. I'd like to have this perfected in a couple of weeks.

New name for Lip Lusters!!! The other day my son asked me what a glossary was.

As I explained it, I stopped short and had a "light bulb moment".
Glossary...lip gloss...Lip Glossary!
Why didn't I think of it before? So, once I run through the labels I have on hand,
Lip Lusters will forever more be known as Lip Glossary. What do you think of that?

A new batch of Curiouser is curing. Funny, I can't seem to get the color I want.

This batch looks a heck of a lot different than the first batch. I want orange on top
and I keep getting these muted tans. Oh well, perhaps the next batch will look better.
Still good soap though and it'll be ready in four weeks :-)

A new offering will soon be in the Latherati shop, after many requests for perfume samples.

Dry Oil Body Sprays...a little info

I just restocked the Latherati etsy shop with Dry Oil Body Sprays! These sprays are wonderfully moisturizing but not greasy. They leave a nice soft, velvety feel and absorb quickly without leaving a residue.

Try putting them in the fridge during the summer and spray on cool for a quick refresher.

Here's a little info about the amazing benefits so you can see what all the fuss is about:

Alter Ego

Inspired by Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson (and the winner of the Give Me Gothic Challenge), Alter Ego is double scented with a "good" and "evil" fragrance. The soap is curing and yesterday, I made the roll-on perfumes. Since there are two scents, I made two perfumes.

The "Dr. Jekyll" version is light and airy with ozone & sea spray notes intermingled with linden blossom

The "Mr. Hyde" version is a blend of cedarwood & sandalwood with notes of amber, dark musk and rich vanilla

I was thinking about selling them as a set but am now thinking that I will sell them individually and you can decide if you want both. They would be great for layering as you would get some nice base notes from the Mr. Hyde scent and some light, airy notes from Dr. Jekyll. Either way, look for them in the shop soon!

It was fun creating two scents for one book. I might have to do more of those :-)

Another Jane Austen novel has been turned into soap! Inspired by Persuasion, The Cobb is a refreshing ocean scent. A base blend of marine, ozone & sea spray with whispers of jasmine, freesia, lily, citrus and wood grounded by the slightest hint of musk. It's a very clean, cool and invigorating scent. Will be ready in four weeks!

This batch was my first double batch as most of the bars are heading to the Jane Austen Centre Gift Shop in Bath, England. I enjoyed the challenge of working with such large amounts of oils and butters and I'll probably start making double batches of all my soaps :-)

I'm working on the matching perfumes this week and will have them for sale in the Latherati shop soon.

New soap is curing: The May 2010 Challenge winner - Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. Here is Latherati's interpretation...a double scented, two layer bar. The "evil" bottom layer is black amber, musk and sandalwood. The "good" top layer is a light rain scent and linden blossom. I loved this challenge - not only is the book a great read but blending two scents was fun. Call it what you will...light/dark, good/evil...this was a thought-provoking and intriquing project.

A new Latherati soap is on the curing rack! Inspired by One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Ciento is a blend of bananas, smoky almonds and the surprise zing of peppermint! Sounds strange, I know, but one thing I've learned blending fragrances...don't be afraid to try something odd, it just might work...and this works.

Thought you might also enjoy this snapshot of a flower (what is it???) that my neighbor has in her garden. It's the most delicious dark plum color.

It's Friday and I'm looking forward to the weekend. My son's 7th birthday party is tomorrow and that means more Bionicles, Yu-Gi-Oh cards, Legos and Bakugan toys. Typical boy :-)

Latherati's first craft show, the MayDay Underground in Rochester, NY, was a success. I had such a great time meeting so many talented crafters & artists. Here is my booth. The venue was awesome...the basement of an old warehouse.

I finally made my Alice in Wonderland soap. It'll be ready in 4 weeks. The top color wasn't exactly what I was going for. I wanted more of an orange color but I think this works. I named it Curiouser...from Alice's quote "Curiouser and curiouser!" cried Alice.

Curiouser - sweet orange marmalade, white cake, tea and a smidge of black pepper.

This week I'll be making more dry oil body sprays. I love the feel of this oil. It's light, non-greasy and lightly scented. Try spraying it on right after your shower prior to drying off. With the hot weather coming, you can also keep it in the fridge so when those dog days of summer have you wishing for a cool down, a few sprays should do the trick.

So, it's been awhile since I've blogged. Care to hear my excuse? Well, just hear me out. I'll keep it short.

I had plans to move out of my soon-to-be ex-husbands house. Thought I found a great house to rent...signed the lease, boxed up my treasures and was geared up for the big move. Moving day came...learned about the pit bull next door that escapes often enough to corner and scare the wits out of my new neighbor. That was red-flag number one. There were others but I won't go into detail. To make a long story short, I lugged my prized possessions back home and am sitting tight until something better comes along.

One good thing that came out of this debacle...I reorganized my soap studio. It may be short lived but it's set up to allow for maximum organization. Here are a few pics. I always love to see how everyone's workspace is set up so thought you might like to see mine. Of course, all the soapmaking is done in the kitchen but this room is where I sit and think, blend, package and ponder. And when I need a break, I sit down at my piano (to the left of the bookcase) and belt out a few tunes.

Make a pennant (or bunting) style banner...

I'm getting ready for some upcoming craft shows and needed a banner. After pricing some on the net, I decided to try my hand at making my own. Here's how I made mine. Perhaps it will inspire you to make your own unique banner. :-)

What you need:

large letters printed in your business font on plain paper
black construction paper
pages from a book (you can use decorative, scrapbook paper or what have you)
clear Contac (tm) paper
paper cutter
double folded quilt binding
glue stick
sharp blade (exacto knife, etc.)

Getting started

Trim construction paper and pages to the size you want; layer them and tack with glue stick.

I printed each letter separately in the largest font I could fit on one page; I then placed this over the construction paper and traced (hard!) to leave an outline.

Use your Exacto knife to cut out your letters; tack onto your layered papers.

Cut Contac paper to fit; encase each banner letter in same.

Place each page between the binding; using a sewing machine, on a zig zag stitch, sew your letters onto binding. I spaced mine about an inch apart and used 3 yards of binding.

Ta-Da! Easy! Hope it helps someone.

I will also be offering a Bronte Sisters Collection soon, once I read The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte and make a soap inspired by it, as well as re-read Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. My Wuthering Heights (Emily Bronte) soap is in the blending room, still being tweaked until I arrive at the perfect scent.

Another collection will be Thomas Hardy soaps. Dairymaid is already in the shop (inspired by Tess of the D'Urbervilles), I'm almost finished reading Jude the Obscure and then I'll read ??? Maybe that will be my next challenge...help me decide on a third Thomas Hardy book.

Look! a new Latherati Banner...and new soap

What do you think of the new banner and avatar? I LOVE it. Since I redesigned my labels, I wanted a more cohesive look and I'm so pleased with this one. I, once again, asked Barbie of Enchanted Memories, to make a new banner and avatar. She's amazingly patient to work with and will keep working at it until you get exactly what you want.

New on the curing rack...Tara, inspired by Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell. This has been in the works for a long time as I kept tweaking the scent...but finally, I hit the right blend...plantation cotton, lemon balm, a hint of spearmint and lovely southern magnolias. It's subtle and clean and fresh. Will be ready in four weeks :-)

Ethereal is curing...

Ethereal came out exactly as I'd hoped. This always makes me happy. The scent is light and airy but with a bit of depth, a nice balance of lightness and heaviness. Stunning. Will be ready in 4 weeks :-)

Also, a new soap is brewing in the Latherati studio...the February Challenge winner, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. I read it in two days...it is the kind of book you can't put down. The style and structure of Ms. Bronte's writing is, I believe, way ahead of her time...a tragic, romantic tale told to us by the housekeeper, Nelly Dean, after the fact, so all is based on her recollections, going from past to present and back again. I loved the book and would recommend it to anyone. It's a shame Ms. Bronte did not live to make more remarkable books like Wuthering Heights.

Now, I could use your help in picking a name for the Wuthering Heights-inspired soap. It'll be a dark scent, something smoky perhaps with green notes and a touch of blackberry. I'm leaning towards something like:

* Vengeance
*Avarice
*Kismet
* Obsession

Something along those lines. Any ideas?

Here's an idea I'd like to throw at my followers: I've been wanting to offer gift sets at Latherati and came up with the idea of including a vintage copy of the book that inspired the soap.

So far, I've picked up a few paperbacks (hardcovers would be better, I think!) that I would include with a bar of soap and a body lotion, all nicely packaged in a reusable box. What are your thoughts?

Bits and Pieces

It's been a crazy week here! My poor little man has been sick with strep all week. As you might remember from this post, I quit my job and none too soon, I suppose. I would have missed a whole week staying home with my little guy and probably been fired!

Since I quit my job last week, I've been in a bit of panic mode. Working endlessly to stock up the etsy vintage shop. Rummaging through mom's house is a bit disconcerting as she is having trouble letting things go. While I feel somewhat cold-hearted nabbing her prized possessions collected over the years, it is what she wants and clearing some space in her house will be good for her, especially her mental state - like a burden being lifted off her shoulders. When she sees that I'm shipping a package off to its new owner, she's happy that someone else can treasure her dearly beloved tokens.

Latherati soap going to Haiti via Clean the World. I'll package it up nice and send it off this week :-)

On a more uplifting note, I recently found a website called Clean the World and will be shipping off a box of Latherati soap to help in the relief efforts for Haiti. While it's a small endeavor on my part, it makes me feel good to contribute to a worthy cause.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being...my thoughts

I finished the January Challenge winning book...The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera. Thought-provoking to say the least! Here are my thoughts on this philosophical gem of a read:

Set in Czechoslovakia in the 1960’s, this is a story that revolves mostly around Tomas, a physician who is torn between his love for Teresa and his love for philandering. It’s the story of living without weight or substance. It makes you think about how insignificant your life really is. Since you only have one life, do the choices you make and can never make again, really matter…are they significant in any way? Like the authors’ saying “einmal ist keinmal” or one time equals no time…is it better to have not happened at all?

Is it weakness or strength that bonds Tomas and Teresa? Tomas leans toward living a “light” life, having one affair after another while Teresa leans toward living a “heavy” life, suffering Tomas’ infidelities…it sinks her, depresses her. Is life heavy because of the burdens and responsibilities or is it light because really, how much of a mark can one person leave?

This is definitely a book that I could read again and gain more insight into the authors’ meaning and intention.

My rating: 5 stars *****

Now, for the scent!.... I think this needs to start with some heavy notes of musk, maybe pepper and a touch of wood, followed by perhaps milk or honey with light top notes of orange blossom and a touch of jasmine. My blending test starts today!

I Quit my Day Job !!!

No, not because I made a gazillion sales on etsy so don't try to find my QYDJ feature, it's not there...yet ;-). This is more out of necessity, a blessing in disguise if you will.

The story: When my husband and I decided to split up, I panicked and got a job, ASAP. Gone were my days of homeschooling my children, running my business and keeping house. Things changed overnight. But it felt good. It was a change and a challenge and I was up for it. Ahh, how we try to convince ourselves that making choices out of desperation are good. Not.

My family suffered, my business suffered, I suffered. I was drowning.

Then, my 82 year old mother recently came down with pneumonia, then needed angioplasty. Spending time with her and reflecting on my current life, I realized I wasn't happy with the direction of my life. We came up with a solution. Quit my job, take care of her and devote more time to my business...a lot more time.

We also decided to bring back Bee's Vintage, an etsy shop I had prior to going back to work. Oh, how I missed Bee's Vintage. I'm excited to get the shop up and running again.

Excited but terrified! I know that I will work longer, harder hours to run both businesses than I ever did at the law firm, but it's something I love, something I'm passionate about. And I will have the flexibility to devote more time to my family.

So, that's my big news. Times, they are a changin'....for the better. It's funny how you think you are going down one path, only to come up against a hurdle and find yourself going another direction. Life is full of surprises and that's what makes life...life :-)

New Soap - CLASSIC

This soap has been a long time in coming. I had the idea ages ago but it took me this long to perfect the scent. It was a touchy one and I'll tell you why...only those that get giddy walking into an old bookshop and picking up a vintage copy of Anna Karenina will appreciate this. I am one of those people and I know there are others out there. Did you know that there are a number of Facebook fan pages for those who love this smell???

Think cracked leather bindings, rich vanilla and a touch of eucalyptus...this is what an old book smells like. Trust me. I did the research.

Sinister, inspired by Something Wicked this Way Comes by Ray Bradbury. Blue and black layers/swirls, it even looks sinister doesn't it? The scent: Fall pumpkins, black licorice, carnival cotton candy and a hint of spearmint. Amazing. I'm so happy with this one. This book is fantastic. I love Ray Bradbury's style and have another book scent of his in the works - Dandelion Wine.

Top: Longbourn, inspired by Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen. This was for restocking. Honeysuckle and lemon, it's fresh and clean. This will be part of a new gift pack I'm working on of Jane Austen inspired soaps (along with Matchmaker and Barton Cottage).

Bottom: Celebration, inspired by The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Naturally colored soap with a light swirl of golden glamour. Think of the enchanting parties from The Great Gatsby. The scent: Champagne with just the slightest hint of sugared strawberries.

Fabulous Finds...

Now that Christmas is over and the recipients have opened their gifts, I can brag about them here without worry that they will read it ;-)

I try either to make all our Christmas gifts or buy them handmade. This year, three great finds were from etsy...I could have done so much more damage but I restrained myself.

Bliss candles, 2 pack in a holiday box. I ordered spearmint/eucalyptus and white tea & ginger. Both were fabulous and very professionally labeled. I love the rustic lids. My sister-in-law was impressed.

Brainscan organic fair trade coffee, Small World Blend...this smelled divine but I have yet to be invited to my friends house for a cup of java...hmmm, he may just be keeping this all to himself!

Arm warmers from Bows by Jess for my 12 year old daughter. These were originally designed as baby leg warmers but they can also be used as arm warmers. My daughter loved them. She has her own style and was excited knowing she'll be the only one is school with these!

A big thanks to all the fabulous etsy sellers...what would I do without you!

Holidays and soap...

Every year I get my children a new Hallmark ornament, so when they leave the nest, their first Christmas tree won't be bald. I love, too, how the ornaments, over the years, genuinely reflect their interests that year. I mean, how does one child go from loving Rainbow Brite to zombies??? Here are this years ornaments.

A mini version of our own chocolate lab for my animal-loving 12 year old

A "Where the Wild Things Are" ornament for my 6 year old, a favorite book of ours and one I've read to him since birth.

On a soapy note, two new soaps are on the curing rack.

Wishing, inspired by Half Magic by Edward Eager. This was the winner of the "Favorite Children's Book" challenge. A blend of vanilla and cinnamon and a hint of magic.

Dust Bowl, inspired by To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This was the winner of the "Banned Books" challenge and a personal favorite of mine. A blend of camellia flowers, amber, honey, spearmint and a smidge of Dustbowl Days dirt. Very intriguing.

I've redesigned the Latherati labels and am excited to launch them the first of the year. I'm working on some new book scents and am gearing up to post a new challenge sometime in January. 2010 is going to be a fantastic year. I wish you all the happiest of days this coming year.

Food & Christmas gifts...

There is a new restaurant in town that has the best shrimp and crab bisque. Since my budget doesn't always allow me to be so indulgent, I figured I'd better learn to make it myself. I used my favorite recipe website, allrecipes.com, and tweaked this recipe until I made, what I think, is a satisfyingly similar bisque to the Delta Lake Inn. Here is the recipe with my own additions (based on the very helpful comments/suggestions from others who have ventured to make this their own).

Ingredients:

6 tablespoons butter (I used only 4)
6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon celery salt
4 1/2 cups milk
1 1/2 cups chicken stock
3 tablespoons minced onion
3 cups cooked lobster meat, shredded (I used shrimp and crab)
1 tablespoon paprika
1/2 cup light cream (I used half & half)

I also added a can of tomato paste, a smidgen of white wine and a dash of cayenne pepper.

Directions
Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Stir in the flour, salt, pepper and celery salt until well blended. Gradually stir in the milk so that no lumps form, and then stir in the chicken stock. Cook over low heat, stirring constantly, until the soup begins to thicken. Add the onion and lobster; season with paprika. Cook and stir for 10 more minutes. Stir in the cream, heat through and serve.

I'll post another pic when they are done but here are the instructions for making these photo blocks (great gifts for grandparents!):

Need:
wood blocks (I got mine at Michaels)
ModPodge
pretty papers
pics of your kids (or your dog, cat, what have you)
paint

Directions:
Paint all the edges (I used a plum-brown color); when dry, sand for a distressed look.
Cut pretty paper and pics to fit on each side; ModPodge those suckers down.
Coat with ModPodge.

Done.

You can stack them or line them up; switch the blocks around for new pics, etc. I have a set I made for myself last year sitting on my bookshelf.

Book Review: To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

The theme of the October Latherati challenge was "Banned Books". The winning book and one of my all-time favorites was To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I am in love with this story.

Set in the 1930’s in Alabama, the story is narrated by curious Scout Finch and follows the lives of her and her brother, Jem, over the course of three years during the Great Depression.

Raised by a lawyer father, Atticus, who is patient, tolerant and sensitive and their black maid, Calpurnia, Scout and Jem live a carefree life of exploring the neighborhood and innocently learning valuable life lessons amid a complex and diverse world. Attempts to lure out the mysterious neighbor, Boo Radley, learning about racial prejudices and the meaning of courage and dignity are just a few of the topics touched upon in this book.

Fully developed characters, rich with distinct personalities, lead you through some of life’s toughest lessons and you come to the end with a sense of wonder, empathy and inspiration.

It’s a shame this book was ever on a banned books list (along with a great many other fantastic books) and I hope for those of you who haven’t read this book, you head straight to your local library or favorite bookshop and pick it up. You won’t regret it.

As for the scent of this book? My olfactories are giving me:

amber, milk, camellia flowers, just a wee bit of doublemint gum (how can I forget that loving gift from Boo??) and the slightest hint of Dustbowl Days dirt.

Just an FYI: Did you know that the Alabama State Flower is the Japanese Camellia? Well, it is.

As for the next Latherati challenge, be prepared for a little twist. I've got a great idea brewing and it will take some "audience participation" but I promise it will be fun and the prize will be great! Playing Catch Up...

I realize I've been neglecting my poor blog...my only excuse is "overwhelmingness". Yes, it's a new word and the definition is:

overwhelmingness: n. the feeling of life having been completely flipped over on its head and being overcome by a need to hide under the covers with a bowl of ice cream and wait it out.

No, really, it isn't that bad...just a little stressful with all the changes here at my house. But, moving beyond my pity party...

Remember my last challenge? It was the Children's Book Challenge. Well, the winning book was titled "Half Magic" written by Edward Eager. It's a great book but it's leaving me stumped for a scent! Now, I like to think I have this gift and that I can read any book and just know what it should smell like. Perhaps children's books work a little differently. They aren't always filled with those subtle nuances of "scent" the way adult literature is. So, if any of you have read the book, send me your suggestions. I'm eager to work on this one and I'm sure the winner of the challenge would appreciate getting her soap!

You may have noticed that I've been M.I.A. lately. Well, I have my reasons and I thought I would let you in on a little of my personal life...

I've been a work at home mom for 10 years. In my previous life, I was a legal assistant and have my paralegal certificate. I put that all aside while I traveled with my Army husband and raised my kids. We were lucky to live in some grand places like Heidelberg, Germany (where my second daughter was born), Monterey, California (where my first daughter was born) and Savannah, Georgia. I won't mention North Dakota ;-)

While all this traveling/raising kids was going on, my marriage was disintegrating. So, 19 years later, my husband and I are at the point of divorce. Ooh, the D word. It brings pity upon you. But I neither want nor need pity. It's been a long time coming and it is a good thing...really.

But, along with the big D, it means that, while I love my little soap business, it's not enough to support me (although I have dreams of hitting it big, like all other soapers)...SO, I'm back to work. Yup, I'm putting my legal assistant skills back into action and am now working for a wonderful law firm. I feel very lucky and blessed to have found such a perfect job for me despite the economy.

So, that is my official excuse as to why I've not been around to keep you up to date with the happenings at Latherati. Once I get settled into a routine, I will find the time to put as much effort into my business as I can. Please bear with me ;-)...

Back from Vacay :-)

Well, I'm back from vacation. It's always nice to come home to your own bed, your own stuff, isn't it? I had a wonderful time in Ohio visiting my best friend and her girls. I brought my camera with the best intention of taking lots of pics but of course, I took none! We were just having too much fun to stop for a Kodak moment.

We visited the Science Center in Columbus and hit the pool a couple of times. It's much hotter there than central NY so I didn't need the jeans and sweater I thought I might need. My best friend and I treated ourselves to a relaxing massage and a nice lunch out without the kids.

So, now it's back to the grindstone but like I said, I'm glad to be back.

It's a soapmaking day! Yay, my favorite kind of day :-) I'll be making my third Jane Austen soap, Sense & Sensibility - a sweet rose & ivy blend.

For all you Austen fans, I'll be making up gift boxes of the three books I have so far {Emma, Pride & Prejudice & Sense & Sensibility}. Each box will have a bar of each Austen soap.

I did it! I perfected my sugar scrub recipe and ooohhh, let me tell you, it is divine! A fluffy, light as air, whipped blend of shea butter and nourishing oils, sugar and scent...it's heaven in a jar.

This pic shows the scrub (scented with chocolate) in a 6 oz. jar that will be available soon in the etsy shop, a 3 oz. jar for my soon-to-be-offered bride's maid baskets (or gift baskets in general) and a 1.5 oz. jar for the B&B's.

Today, I also made the Beguile lip balm, an alluring blend of lavender & spearmint. I'll be working on the labels for these products and more today and hope to get them listed tomorrow.

On a side note, I wanted to show you a pic of my "deck". Prior to sending my kids to school this coming September, we were a homeschooling family. My son loves to play Yu-Gi-Oh but decided to make his own cards. This brought a variety of skills into "play". Designing the cards, drawing, writing, cutting, addition & subtraction. Now that's what I call fun learning.

Yes, I do! I made scrumdidilyumptious chocolate soap, inspired by {what else?} Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl.

Rich, chocolate smelling cocoa butter and chocolate fragrance oil almost makes me want to drool. A little sprinkling of cocoa powder on top and we are set for a cocoa-licious time ;-) {note: due to the fragrance oil in this soap, the bars will eventually turn a dark rich brown, just like a chocolate bar...mmmm}

This is the second batch of soap inspired by a children's book and you remember what that means? My 11 year old daughter/apprentice helped with this one. She'll also help design the label and packaging.

New product! Dry Oil Spray

I've been working on a dry oil spray. It's a lovely blend of fractionated coconut oil, jojoba oil, cyclomethicone and fragrance. Very moisturizing but not greasy, it leaves a dry silky feel. Love it! I have a few fragrances listed at the Latherati etsy shop.

On a personal note, my 6 year old son lost his first tooth. He was so excited and the tooth fairy was very generous in giving him a whole dollar!

We have a winner!

We used random.org to pick a number between 1 and 122 and came up with number 28, a book titled "Half Magic" by Edward Eager, suggested by Wehaf.

This challenge had 106 book titles suggested! Plus, 16 extra entries. There were quite a few duplicates, like "The Giving Tree", "Alice in Wonderland", "The Secret Garden (we just made this soap!), and "Charlotte's Web"...all great classics.

Some suggestions were already on our list to make {James and the Giant Peach and Alice in Wonderland}.

I read reviews for many of the suggested books and you bet I'll be picking them up at the library to read. They may end up as soap as well.

Thanks to all who participated. It makes me feel good to know that so many children's books are so beloved to you all.

Sugar Scrub Testing

Aaah, sugar scrubs...there's nothing better than a good scrub to get rid of all that dead skin and moisturize all at the same time.

I made up this batch this morning but already, I need to tweak it. I need to whip the heck out of the mango butter and oils and up the ewax. I scented the test batch with Beguile, my favorite scent so far.
